The Meaning of the Juneteenth Flag Colors

Juneteenth Flag colors have a significant meaning. Do you know history behind the flag? The Juneteenth flag was created by Boston Ben (Ben Haith) in 1997, the founder of the National Juneteenth Celebration Foundation.

Other contributors to the flag were Verlene Hines, Azim, and Eliot Design. A few years later Lisa Jeanne Graf, Illustrator fine tuned their vision into the flag we see today.

In 2007, the date of the first Juneteenth (June 19, 1865) was added to the flag.

The colors stand for…

🔴RED (The Arc)

On the Juneteenth-specific flag, red symbolizes unity with the traditional American flag. The arched shape is meant to symbolize new horizons and new opportunities

⚪️WHITE (The Star & The Burst)

Mirroring the white of the American flag, the white stars on the Juneteenth flag represent the emancipation of enslaved Black people in Texas who, upon being freed, became Americans under the law. The five-pointed star represents Texas, aka the Lone Star State, where the freeing took place and the freedom of enslaved people in all 50 states. The starburst represents a new beginning for all African Americans in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865. The outline surrounding the star is meant to reflect a nova— or new star—which represents a new beginning for all.

🔵BLUE

Blue represents America and the American flag. While there's still a long fight for equality and justice ahead, the American flag colors on the Juneteenth flag represent a continued commitment of people in United States to do better, learn, and work hard to live up to the American ideals of justice for all.

The red, white and blue represents the American flag, a reminder that slaves and their descendants were and are Americans.

The Juneteenth flag is often flown alongside the American flag during Juneteenth celebrations and is a symbol of the ongoing struggle for racial equality and justice in the United States.
